Strengthening Irish-US Business Ties: IABA Panel Highlights Growing North Carolina-Ireland Partnership

The Irish American Business Association (IABA) recently hosted a dynamic panel discussion featuring distinguished leaders at the forefront of Irish-US business relations: Chief Deputy Secretary of Commerce Kenny Flowers, Consul General Frank Groome, and North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall.

A Pivotal Moment for Irish-US Relations

2026 represents a landmark year for strengthening ties between Ireland and the United States. The USA250 initiative, launched by the Honorable Geraldine Byrne Nason, Irish Ambassador to the US, last fall, provides a unique framework for deepening collaboration and celebrating the enduring connection between our nations.

This panel discussion came at an exciting moment as businesses on both sides of the Atlantic continue to discover new opportunities for growth, innovation, and partnership in an increasingly interconnected global economy.

North Carolina: A Competitive Hub with Deep Irish Roots

North Carolina has emerged as one of the most competitive economies in the United States and a vital bridge between Ireland and the Southeastern region. The state's business-friendly environment, diverse economy, world-class research institutions, and skilled workforce make it an increasingly attractive destination for Irish companies entering the U.S. market and American firms pursuing globalization strategies.

The historic ties between Ireland and North Carolina run deep, from the early Scots-Irish settlers who shaped the state's cultural heritage to today's thriving business partnerships. These connections are being reinforced through new infrastructure and opportunities that bring our regions closer together than ever before.

New Connections Taking Flight

The relationship between North Carolina and Ireland reached a new milestone with the upcoming launch of Aer Lingus's direct route between Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Dublin in April 2026. This transformative connection makes travel between the regions easier than ever, facilitating business development, tourism, and cultural exchange.

Adding to the excitement, the upcoming Aer Lingus Classic football game between UNC Chapel Hill and TCU will showcase North Carolina on an international stage while celebrating the strong Irish-American connection that defines our community.

A Gathering of Leaders and Innovators

The event brought together Irish-American business leaders and key North Carolina partners from diverse sectors to explore:

  • Opportunities for collaboration and growth in North Carolina's competitive economy

  • Innovation partnerships across industries

  • Strategies for successful market entry and expansion

  • Building lasting networks that support cross-border business development

Our Distinguished Panel

Elaine Marshall, North Carolina Secretary of State, shared insights on the state's business landscape and commitment to fostering international partnerships.

Kenny Flowers, Chief Deputy Secretary of Commerce for the State of North Carolina, highlighted the state's economic development initiatives and the opportunities available for companies looking to grow in one of America's most dynamic markets.

Frank Groome, Consul General of Ireland in Atlanta, discussed Ireland's commitment to strengthening economic, cultural, and political ties with North Carolina and the Southeastern United States.

Gratitude and Partnership

IABA extends sincere thanks to Parker Poe for their generous support in making this event possible, and to the Consulate General of Ireland in Atlanta for their invaluable partnership. Their commitment to fostering Irish-US business relationships continues to create meaningful opportunities for companies and communities on both sides of the Atlantic.

This event reflected our shared commitment to building strong networks that facilitate business success and deepen the historic bonds between Ireland and North Carolina. As direct flights connect our regions and new partnerships take root, the future of Irish-North Carolina business collaboration has never been brighter.
